Barrandov as Producer

ZelaryI fell in love with this studio due to its fantastic atmosphere. It’s easy to work there, it’s very easy to breathe there, you find extremely professional people there, and it has an enormous, cinematographic culture…”

Nikita Michalkov (The Barber of Siberia, 1999)

Thanks to its tradition, as well as its high technical and artistic standards, Barrandov is viewed as a top international studio that provides a wide range of film services. More than thirty feature films – Czech as well as foreign productions – pass through its gates on a yearly basis.

Barrandov Studios itself is viewed as a significant film producer. Both of these missions are inseparably joined with the studios and are intertwined within its more than seventy-year history.

Oscar Nominations: ZELARY

„… This year's Czech submission for the foreign film Oscar, pic seems destined to ride assured direction, solid perfs and a nuanced story of universal human concerns to warm reviews and beefy arthouse biz.”

Eddie Cockrell, Variety Magazine (2003)

Since 1992, we have participated as producer or coproducer for more than thirty films. Our most successful production effort was Zelary (Ondrej Trojan, director, and Barrandov Studio and T.H.A., producers), which was seen by over one-half million viewers in Czech cinemas. The film’s artistic quality earned it an Oscar nomination from the American Film Academy in the category of Best Foreign Language Film for 2003.

Other films originating at the Barrandov Studios stages have also attained commercial and artistic success. Jedna ruka netleska – One Hand Can’t Clap (David Ondricek, director) also exceeded the one-half million viewer mark in addition to Zelary. Cerne barony – The Black Barons (Zdenek Sirovy, director) was seen by almost a million and a half viewers! Otesanek – Greedy Guts (UK) – Little Otik (US), a film directed by Jan Svankmajer, the magician of surrealist film, was awarded the Cesky lev – Czech Lion for the best film of 2001. Mistri – Champions (Marek Najbrt, director) received three Czech Lion Awards as well as a special mention at goEast 2005 – the Fifth Festival of Central and Eastern European Film held in Wiesbaden.

Barrandov has always been a crossroads where national film cultures from around the world meet. We are honoured to have been part of such renowned projects such as the star-studded, European megahit The Barber of Siberia (directed by Nikita Michalkov and starring Julia Ormond). We also participated in Underground (Emir Kusturica, director), which received a Golden Palm Award in Cannes in 1995.

Barrandov Studios is a member of the Audiovisual Producers’ Association (APA).
