PRAGUE – Brooklyn Square has arisen on Barrandov Studios premises in Prague. This was a requirement for the American-French co-production "Babylon A.D.", a film featuring the popular Vin Diesel.
"Barrandov's Set Department used 1,300 cubic meters of wood for this construction, which is 180 meters long and 130 meters wide. This volume corresponds to that needed for building fifteen single-level wood cottages measuring ten meters by ten meters each," according to Tomas Zelazko, the studios' spokesperson. Building activities were underway for four months and employed over 120 people. The square also includes a marketplace and the exterior façade of a railway station.
"Construction of the square, which cost a total of approximately 50 million Czech crowns, also used 570 cubic meters of asphalt for roads, 400 cubic meters of concrete for pavements and other areas, and 1,900 running meters of concrete curbstones in addition to the wood. Over 30,000 square meters of terrain were modified while leveling the terrain required for this set," Zelazko added.
"Babylon A. D." started shooting at Barrandov last December and is scheduled to premier later this year. The plot takes places in the not-too-distant future. As the film's main hero, Thoorop, a former Serbian soldier portrayed by Vin Diesel, is assigned the risky task of leading a young woman from Russia to Canada. Over the course of the journey, he discovers that she has been infected with a virus and technology that could be used by a mysterious American cult to create a genetically-modified Messiah.
