Hotel for Bond Film Furnished by Barrandov
BARRANDOV STUDIOS FURNISHES LUXURIOUS HOTEL FOR NEWEST BOND ADVENTURE
Some of the sets for Bond 22 are currently being constructed at Barrandov. The producers have placed an order with Barrandov Studios to create the furnishings for the luxurious International Grand Hotel featured in the next episode of the successful film series about Agent 007. Bond 22 was originally set to be shot in Prague, but, due to the nonexistence of incentives for filmmakers, the creators decided on England instead.
“The Grand Hotel interior sets that we are preparing for the Bond 22 project include such things as eight windows (including Venetian blinds); three sets of double-wing doors (including doorjambs); two sets of sliding louver doors; two reception desks; two sets of window shutters; and other similar items,” according to Stepan Cerveny, the director of the Barrandov Studios Set Department. He goes on to say that, in spite of the fact that this is not a very large order, it is one that is prestigious. “After their experiences with the preceding film of the famous Secret Agent James Bond adventure series – the film ‘Casino Royale’, which, for the most part originated at Barrandov – the English producers of this next sequel approached us once again. We completed the sets for the Grand Hotel within a timeframe of three weeks and they have already been shipped to England,” he adds.
“Casino Royale“, the twenty-first in the series of Agent 007 films, was shot at Barrandov from January through June 2006. For this particular film, Barrandov’s Set Department completed numerous sets at the studios’ soundstages. These included the interiors for M’s apartment, the Casino Royale, the Hotel Splendide, and the Grand Venetian Hotel, as well as a Security Room set. In addition, numerous stucco and artistic carpentry pieces were installed outside of the Studios.
Barrandov Studios has abundant experience with shooting other megafilms. The list of productions that were made at Barrandov last year include the famous sci-fi flick “Babylon A.D.” and “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”, which is the second of the well-known adventure film series. For “Babylon A.D.”, the Sets Department constructed, amongst other things, a replica of Brooklyn Square, a marketplace, and railway station exteriors. The exterior of a submarine was also created for a scene set at the pool located on Barrandov’s backlot in which a submarine emerges from a frozen ocean. In the case of “Prince Caspian”, Barrandov was the site of a castle courtyard and main gate, towers and drawbridge, and the adjoining town, which was linked to the castle by a sixty meter long bridge. Other sets included castle interiors, a cave carved into a mountainside, and a mountain forest scene, complete with waterfall and lake.
