"Solomon Kane" shooting at Barrandov
For the next few weeks, the Barrandov Studios backlot will be used for shooting the film “Solomon Kane”, a co-production with CZ, UK and France. This picture, with an estimated budget of USD 45 million (approximately 770 million Czech crowns) has been filming in Prague since the end of last year.
“‘Solomon Kane’ is also being filmed at the competing stages because, at the time the decision on its filming was being made, our soundstages were reserved for other projects. However, due to the lack of tax incentives, those will ultimately be completed at studios abroad,” according Vladimir Kuba, Barrandov Studios General Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors. He adds that the film is being produced by the International Production Company.
Barrandov Studios is providing all the sets for “Solomon Kane” – both those on Barrandov premises as well as those used at the competitor’s stages. The sets constructed on the Barrandov backlot by the studios’ Sets Division include, amongst others, a sixteenth century marketplace. In addition to the services provided by the Sets Division, the production is also taking advantage of the Barrandov Studios Costumes and Props Department (sixteenth century costumes) and the Film Laboratories.
“Solomon Kane” is based on a story concept by Robert E. Howard. The film is directed by Michael J. Bassett. The picture tells the take of a hero from the second half of the sixteenth century – at the time legendary seafarers were undertaking their journeys of discovery and enjoying great trading and plundering success. Solomon Kane is an incorruptible Puritan – a virtuous hero who travels around the world nonstop and lends his rapier only to assist the forces of good. He battles pirates and dishonest traders and punishes thieves, kidnappers and murderers. His friends include an African shaman, who can metamorphose into any different being – living or dead. He travels across two continents to rescue a kidnapped English aristocratic damsel and shows no fear, even when facing vampires or the living dead.
The cast includes James Purefoy, Max von Sydow, Mackenzie Crook, Rachel Hurd-Wood, and others. Marek Vašut represents the Czech acting community in the film.
Last year, the list of large film productions that were shot at Barrandov include “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”, which is the second film in the American family saga about children in a fairytale kingdom, and “Babylon A.D.”, which stars Vin Diesel and Gérard Depardieu in the leading roles.
