Historical costumes from Barrandov
HISTORICAL COSTUMES FROM BARRANDOV REQUESTED FROM ABROAD MORE AND MORE
Interest in the collection maintained by the Barrandov Studios Costumes and Props Department is continually increasing abroad. At present, the greatest demand is for costumes and props from the nineteenth century. Producers throughout all of Europe have borrowed such items for shoots during recent months and many are being used for current film projects.
“Three hundred costumes from the 1850-1960 timeframe are currently in Portugal for the filming of A CORTE DO NORTE. Just recently, another two hundred complete costumes from the 1872 to 1923 period traveled to Greece for the production of SLAVES IN THEIR BONDS. The latter will be in use through February 2008,” according to Jiri Matejka, the Costumes and Props Department Manager.
Another one hundred items from the Biedermayer Period recently headed out of Barrandov to Germany for the film ZWERG NASE (Little Longnose). The Italian Titania production company is using one hundred and forty costumes from 1850 through 1900 for its film BAKHITA, which is being shot mainly in Venice, through January 2008. Some of the costumes for this film were made to measure by Barrandov’s tailors and seamstresses. For next year, the German HEIMATFILM production company has already rented 300 complete Gothic and Renaissance period costumes for the film THE LETTER FOR THE KING.
“Last year, the Costumes and Props Department prepared a catalog of offerings especially for the American production of SOLOMON KANE. A total of one hundred and fifty costumes from the sixteenth century are almost ready for shipping,” Jiri Matejka disclosed.
Other smaller orders of costumes, furniture, and props are also featured in numerous other projects, such as KORUNA VYSEHRADU (THE CROWN OF VYSEHRAD), the Russian film SCHLIEMANN’S GOLD, and a number of commercials.
Customer interest has supported the creation of web pages which give foreign producers the chance to view individual items and read descriptions in Czech and English. “Our department has undergone significant organizational changes over the past three years, especially in the area of communications with producers from abroad. We have come much closer to our customers through our internet presentation and special catalogues. A customer can now select from more than 15,000 images of furniture and props from our catalogue, not to mention the additional thousands that are included in the foundation for our future complete costume documentation,” adds Costumes and Props Department Manager Jiri Matejka. He goes on to say that, over the past two years, Barrandov costumes have been sent to dozens for countries and have helped establish contacts with Europe’s best artists and creators.
